The cards above link to each air conditioning service. This page covers what a local technician handles, common air-con problems in Adelaide, licensing, safety and what affects the price.
What does an air-con technician in Adelaide handle?
An air conditioning technician installs, services and repairs cooling and heating systems. Most household jobs fall into four groups:
| Job type | Typical examples | More detail |
|---|---|---|
| Split system installation | Wall-mounted reverse cycle units, multi-head systems, replacements | Split system installation |
| Ducted air conditioning | Whole-home ducted reverse cycle, zoning, replacing old ducted units | Ducted air conditioning |
| Servicing and cleaning | Filter and coil cleaning, ducted and evaporative cooler services | Air conditioning servicing |
| Repairs | Not cooling, leaking water, error codes, noisy units | Air conditioner repairs |
Many Adelaide homes have evaporative coolers on the roof as well as, or instead of, refrigerated systems. Some technicians service both. Include the type of system, brand and age in your enquiry so the technician can come prepared.
What air conditioning problems are common in Adelaide?
Adelaide’s climate puts air conditioners through a tough workout.
- Heatwave breakdowns. Systems that have run quietly all spring often fail on the first very hot day, when they’re working hardest. Dirty filters and coils make it worse.
- Not cooling or leaking water. A blocked condensate drain, low refrigerant or a frozen coil are common causes. Our guide to an air conditioner leaking or not cooling covers the safe checks you can make first.
- The wrong size system. An undersized unit runs flat out and still can’t keep up; an oversized one cycles on and off. See what size air conditioner you need.
- Coastal salt air. Outdoor units in beachside suburbs are exposed to salt spray, which can corrode coils and fittings over time.
- Dust and debris. Northern and Hills suburbs can see dust, leaves and bushfire-season smoke clog outdoor units and filters.
- Old switchboards. Adding a large reverse cycle system to an older home can mean the switchboard needs work first. The Adelaide electrician page explains that side.
How does SuperFox work?
SuperFox is an enquiry service, not an air conditioning company.
- Send one enquiry. Call 08 6800 6079 (our digital assistant takes the details) or use the online form. Tell us your suburb, what you need and the type of system if you know it.
- We pass it to one local technician. Just one, not a list.
- The technician calls back within 24–48 hours. They’ll ask about your home, may arrange a site visit, and give you a quote.
- You decide. If the quote suits, you book the work with the technician directly.
If your system has failed during a heatwave and someone in the home is vulnerable to heat, choose Urgent on the form. We can’t promise an arrival time, so keep cool with fans, closed blinds and water in the meantime, and call 000 if anyone shows signs of heat stroke.
Air-con licensing: what should you check?
Two kinds of licence matter for most air-con jobs:
- Refrigerant handling. Installing, regassing, repairing the refrigerant circuit or decommissioning a system requires a refrigerant handling licence issued by the Australian Refrigeration Council (ARCtick).
- Electrical work. Connecting the system to your switchboard and running a dedicated circuit must be done by a licensed electrician. In South Australia, electrical licences are administered by Consumer and Business Services (CBS), and the electrician must issue a certificate of compliance.
Ask the technician:
- Do you hold an ARCtick refrigerant handling licence?
- Who will do the electrical connection, and will I get a certificate of compliance?
- Is my switchboard suitable, or will it need work?
- What manufacturer’s warranty applies, and what servicing does it require?
Never try to regas, move or disconnect an air conditioner yourself. Refrigerant handling and electrical work are both licensed for good reason.
Split system or ducted?
Split systems are the most common choice for cooling a living area or a few bedrooms, while ducted systems suit homes that want even temperatures throughout. The right answer depends on your floor plan, roof space, budget and how you use the house. Our ducted vs split system comparison lays out the trade-offs, and the technician can advise after seeing your home.
Evaporative or refrigerated cooling?
Evaporative coolers push outside air through wet pads and work well on Adelaide’s hot, dry days, but they struggle when humidity rises and don’t heat. Refrigerated reverse cycle systems cool on any day and heat in winter, at a higher running cost for cooling. Many households keep an existing evaporative system and add a split system for bedrooms or humid nights. Mention what you have now in your enquiry so the technician can advise.
What affects the price of air conditioning in Adelaide?
Every installation and repair is quoted on its own. The main factors are:
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| System type and capacity | Larger and ducted systems cost more to buy and install |
| Number of rooms or zones | More indoor units or zones mean more equipment and labour |
| Pipe run and mounting | Long runs, two-storey walls and roof-mounted units take longer |
| Electrical work | A new circuit or switchboard upgrade may be needed |
| Brand and features | Efficiency ratings, Wi-Fi control and quieter models vary in price |
| Removal of old system | Old units must be decommissioned and refrigerant recovered |
The technician will quote before any work starts. Our split system installation cost guide explains the main cost drivers in more detail.
Air conditioning across Adelaide and the Hills
Enquiries come from hot northern suburbs like Salisbury and Elizabeth, coastal homes in Glenelg dealing with salt air, and Hills homes around Mount Barker that need heating as much as cooling. See every suburb on the areas page.
