The service pages above cover the common jobs in detail. This page explains what a local plumber handles, the plumbing problems that come up again and again in Adelaide homes, how SA licensing works and what affects the price.
What does a plumber in Adelaide handle?
A licensed plumber looks after the water supply, hot water, drainage and (with the right licence) gas in your home. Most household jobs fall into a handful of groups:
| Job type | Typical examples | More detail |
|---|---|---|
| Drains and sewer | Blocked sinks, toilets and outdoor drains, tree roots, camera inspections | Blocked drains |
| Hot water | Repairs, like-for-like replacement, gas, electric and solar units | Hot water systems |
| Heat pumps | Swapping an old electric tank for a heat pump | Heat pump hot water |
| Gas | Cooktops, heaters, gas hot water, gas leaks, new lines | Gas fitting |
| Leaks | Hidden leaks, high water bills, shower leaks | Water leak detection |
| Everyday repairs | Dripping taps, running toilets, new tapware | Taps and toilets |
| Tank water | Pressure pumps, mains switching, new tanks | Rainwater tank pumps |
| Urgent jobs | Burst pipes, overflowing drains, no water | Emergency plumber |
Some plumbers focus on drainage, others on hot water or gas. When you describe the job in your enquiry, include as much as you can so the plumber who calls back knows what to bring.
What plumbing problems are common in Adelaide?
Adelaide’s soils, water and housing stock create a few recurring problems.
- Reactive clay soils. Much of the Adelaide Plains sits on clay that swells in wet winters and shrinks over hot, dry summers. That movement can crack older pipes, shift joints and lead to leaks under slabs.
- Tree roots in old sewer lines. Many older suburbs still have clay (terracotta) sewer pipes with mortar joints. Roots find their way into those joints, which is a leading cause of recurring blocked drains. Our guide to tree roots in pipes explains the signs.
- Hard water and scale. Water hardness varies across Adelaide and regional SA. Where it’s higher, scale can build up in hot water units, tap cartridges and shower heads.
- Ageing hot water systems. Plenty of Adelaide homes are still running the original electric storage tank. Hot water systems tend to fail without much warning, often on the coldest morning of the year.
- Hills properties. Homes in the Adelaide Hills are often on rainwater tanks with pressure pumps, and on septic tanks or a community wastewater management system (CWMS) instead of mains sewer. These need a plumber familiar with tank and pump setups.
How does SuperFox work?
SuperFox is an enquiry service, not a plumbing company. Here is what happens:
- You send one enquiry. Call 08 6800 6079 (our digital assistant takes the details) or use the online form. Tell us the suburb, the problem and how urgent it is.
- We pass it to one local plumber. Just one. You won’t be flooded with calls.
- The plumber calls you back within 24–48 hours. They ask questions, may arrange a visit, and give you a quote.
- You decide. If you’re happy with the quote, you book the work directly with the plumber.
For urgent jobs, choose Urgent on the form. We pass it on straight away, but we can’t promise an arrival time, so use the safety steps below while you wait.
Plumbing licences in SA: what should you check?
In South Australia, plumbing, gas fitting and drainage work must be done by people who hold the right licence or registration. Licensing is handled by Consumer and Business Services (CBS), and the Office of the Technical Regulator (OTR) sets and enforces the technical and safety rules.
Before work starts, it’s worth asking the plumber:
- What is your licence number, and does it cover this type of work (for example gas fitting)?
- Will this job need a certificate of compliance?
- Does the quote include parts, labour, removal of old equipment and any permits?
- What manufacturer’s warranty comes with the new product?
For regulated work, such as installing or replacing a water heater, new pipework or gas work, the tradesperson must lodge an electronic certificate of compliance. Minor maintenance, such as changing a tap washer or clearing a blocked drain, doesn’t need one. Keep any certificate you receive with your property records.
What should you do in a plumbing emergency?
Safety first, then call for help.
- Burst pipe or major leak: turn off the water at the main, usually at the meter near the front boundary. Our guide on what to do with a burst pipe walks you through it.
- Smell gas: don’t use switches or flames, get everyone outside and call Australian Gas Networks on 1800 427 532. See signs of a gas leak.
- Leak or fault on SA Water’s side of the meter, or in the street: call SA Water on 1300 729 283. SA Water looks after the main and the meter, while pipes on your side of the meter are the owner’s responsibility.
- Water near electrical fittings, or anyone in danger: call 000.
Then send your enquiry and mark it Urgent so the plumber can call you back.
What affects the price of a plumber in Adelaide?
Every job is quoted on its own. The things that move the price most are:
| Factor | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Type of job | A tap washer and a full hot water replacement are very different jobs |
| Access | Under slabs, tight roof spaces, steep Hills blocks and long driveways take more time |
| Parts and products | Tapware, hot water units and pumps vary widely in price |
| Diagnosis | Hidden leaks and recurring blockages may need a camera or detection equipment |
| Time of day | After-hours and weekend work usually costs more |
| Compliance | Gas work and water heater installs carry certificate and testing requirements |
The plumber will explain how they charge, including any call-out fee, and quote before starting. Our guide to plumber and electrician call-out fees explains what’s usually included.
